2006 Kalihi Kids in Sports Softball Tournament

The Kalihi Education Coalition sponsored the 2006 Kids in Sports Softball Tournament in May 2006. Mahalo to John Mizuno, Program Manager and volunteers for making this event a success.

The Kalihi Kids in Sports program was founded by Dennis Arakaki in the late 1980's and has been successfully supported by dedicated volunteers who choose to make a positive difference for students in the Kalihi District.

This program requires that each student-athlete complete three (3) reading assignments (read three books) have said reading assignment confirmed by a parent or teacher before being allowed to participate in the tournament.

The main points that are stressed in this program are:

1. Read - Always Study

2. Physical activity (tournaments)- Keep your body fit

3. Eat proper foods - WIC basic food chart

Healthy mind and body should ensure students a better opportunity to succed in school and ultimately in life.

The following tournaments are held during the following months of each school year:

November - Volleball (Kalakaua Gym)

Feburary - Basketball (Kalakaua Gym)

May - Softball (Kam Field)

Every participating student is awarded a certificate for their participation in this program for each tournament. In the past, students have received certificates for participating in all 3 sports. Each team (co-ed) is made up of 5th and 6th graders.

Schools that have participated in this program include: Kalakaua Middle, Fern, Kapalama, Waikiki, Waimalu, Mokulele, Puuhale, Kalihi, Kalihi Waena, and Kalihi Uka Elementary Schools.
